Training and Education

Local 22 members have access to some of the best apprenticeships and continuing education programs in the United States. Our training opens doors to new opportunities and career pathways for our members to acquire an array of building construction skills.

Our training programs also help employers ensure they have access to skilled, productive workers who are able to work safely to avoid on-site accidents, increasing overall productivity and efficiency.

We’re proud to offer training in two state-of-the-art New England Laborers’ Training Academies located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and Pomfret, Connecticut. These training academies are fully equipped and offer LIUNA members a variety of courses in the areas of general construction, hazardous waste remediation, lead and asbestos, abatement, cutting and burning, and more.

Construction Craft Laborers Program

Technical School

The Construction Craft Laborers (CCL) Program at Medford Vocational and Technical High School has been leading the nation in construction training for almost 20 years. Built through a partnership between Laborers’ Local 22, LiUNA New England, and Medford Vocational High School, the program provides students with industry-leading training and instruction.

The curriculum, developed in close collaboration with our training program in Hopkinton, prepares students for the construction industry by emphasizing teamwork, safety, accountability, and good work habits. Students of the program are automatically eligible to join the Construction Craft Laborers’ Apprenticeship program and become Local 22 Union Members right out of high school, after they graduate.

Since its launch in 2003, the program has become the blueprint for construction programs at vocational schools throughout Massachusetts and across the country. In 2018, Local 22 built on the success of the CCL Program by launching a second branch of the program at Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School. The program began in January 2019 with a pilot program of 6 students from Gloucester High School traveling to Essex Tech to take shop classes, and grew to include students from Salem and Peabody. Today, Essex Tech now has a dedicated classroom and shop areas outfitted for Local 22 and the CCL program.
